The music of the Harlem Derrby Gala celebrates the legacy of the black jockey through a curated chronology of black American music

The Kentucky Derby

What most people don't know is that black jockey's were really the first superstar athletes in America. Harlem Derby Style believes it's time to give black jockeys the recognition they rightfully deserve and take back ownership of a culture and sport that Black Americans had a profound role in shaping.

Our celebration starts with the roots of Afro-American music with Artists performing Negro spirituals and gospel, featuring Eddie B.Sands, an inspiring gospel singer who performed at the age of 12 in the James Cleveland Youth Choir and trained under Michael Malone, founder of the Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington, D.C.

We then Progress through blues and Jazz, ending with contemporary R&B featuring singer songwriter, Allen Pride Bowser who also plays piano, drums, guitar, produces, models and acts. Pride performed twice at the historic Apollo theatre in 2009 and is the creator of the 'The Platform' in Philadelphia, an event featuring inner city talent.
